Textile explorations at Ós Residency (Icelandic Textile Center)

2026

During my time in Blönduós, I spent hours exploring the surrounding area, foraging for plants, and dyeing both white and brown Icelandic sheep's wool with the extracts I obtained. I really enjoyed cooking up colors in the dye lab and the smell of clean, wet wool. I was able to obtain a lovely blue from lupine flowers; different shades of yellow and green from lupine leaves, birch leaves, and lady's mantle flowers; shades of gray and pale pink from pine cones; and muted beiges from red sorrel, birch bark, and brown algae. To add a pop of orange, I used some locally sourced onion skins.

Using the dyed wool, along with wool in its natural colors (white, brown, gray, and black), I created a series of small tapestries depicting different landscapes and details from the surroundings of Blönduós. Some of the tapestries were made using a combination of wet and needle felting, while others were woven on a small tapestry loom that I could carry with me wherever I went. This allowed me to work outdoors and fully experience the landscape not only through my eyes, but also through my hands.

Through these tapestries, I wanted to capture the essence of the place not only through visual representation, but also by allowing the natural materials that make up the landscape to become an integral part of the works themselves.
